The Institute

The Institute of Design, Materials and Fabrication (IDMF) was founded in July 2013. It currently consists of three independent laboratories run by Prof. Fuge, Prof. Shea (Head of Institute) and Prof. Tilley (Deputy Head of Institute).

IDMF focuses on Engineering Design as a fundamental scientific discipline within Mechanical Engineering including novel material systems, design methodology, methods and tools, computational approaches to engineering design including AI and machine learning, development of innovative technical solutions and novel fabrication processes. We are both curiosity and impact driven. We work across a broad range of domains including global health, energy, aerospace, space, machines and the built environment. IDMF develops new synergies in research and industrial collaboration as well as in the Engineering Design education at MAVT.
